One of the positive side effects of the Tibetans in exile is that today we are perhaps closer than ever to many smaller Himalayan communities. In the Tibetan monasteries in exile, there are many monks from the Buddhist Himalayan area like Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, from Tawang and other areas in Arunachal Pradesh and of course from Bhutan, Sikkim and Ladakh.
In recent years, a number of children
from these areas are also seeking admission in the Tibetan schools in exile. Where ever possible Tibetan schools and administrators are happy to accommodate children from the Himalayan regions into the Tibetan schools.
TCEF has already started working for the education of these Himalayan children now for several years. One of our major sponsorship concentration has been for the children in the remote villages of Zuluk and Nagthang in Sikkim. This area is also a favorite for TCEF’s annual service trips.
Earlier this year a TCEF team met Geshe Lobsang Yonten, who does remarkable work for the children of Ladakh. He reaches out to the children in Zanskar and other remote areas, searches them out and offers to them something they’ve not enjoyed – access to education. His efforts are documented beautifully in a dvd titled Journey from Zanskar. We were inspired by this video and requested that meeting.
As a result of that meeting, we are now collaborating with Geshe Yonten to help with the education of these children from Ladakh. Geshe la, recently sent us case histories of five boys that needed help. All of them are from remote areas of Ladakh – and they are probably the first in their entire line of generation to ever go to school and have access to education. All the children will stay at Kyitsel-ling Tibetan Children’s Education Center, N India that TCEF helped to found almost fifteen years ago and study in the local Tibetan school there. For these five children, we believe that the education they receive has the potential to change their lives.
You can change their lives forever. Please consider sponsoring the education of a student from Ladakh. To sponsor you can:
