KYITSEL-LING WATER SYSTEM REPAIR

PROJECT UPDATE

This is an update on a project that was submitted and approved by the board last year. Work on this project has already started. At the time of filing this report, the blueprint has been developed and workers have started the basic brick and motor foundation to hold the water storage tanks. Soon the business end of the project involving storage tanks, piping and distribution system will start.

Broken Pipes, Mold and Mildew on Southern Walls

SOUTHERN WALLS NEED TO BE REPAIRED

There is also mold, mildew and a fair amount of water related damage to the walls. The backside of the building needs to be repaired with a fresh coat of cement and plastering. That repair work is currently taking place.

WATER TANKS NEED TO BE CENTRALIZED

Right now water storage tanks are at several different places. Work is underway to create a single central storage space. Also, current storage tanks are not protected from the monkeys. In the summer when they are thirsty, they try to rip open the tanks to get water. The new central storage space will be enclosed within a grid enclosure

WASH AREA NEXT TO KITCHEN NEEDS TO REPAIRED

The washing area next to the kitchen needs to be repaired. Right now there are areas with mold and broken pipes. The pipes need to be repaired and the walls need to be re-plastered. The entire flooring of this space is in a bit of a mess right now – uneven spaces etc. The best hope is to recement the entire floor – and create a much better over environment for this space.
Often, when one starts working on a project, one comes across other problems and issues that just needs to be taken care of. In undertaking the water system repairs, Kyitsel-ling came across and addressed so other vital issues – like procuring a safe storage space for their gas cylinders!

STORAGE SPACE FOR GAS CYLINDERS

In India, cooking gas is supplied in small red cylinders. In the image on the right, you can see that currently the gas cylinders are stored in one corner of the wash area room. This is probably not even safe. On the left, you can see that they are creating a small dedicated storage facility for the gas cylinders.
The additional works added a little bit to the cost of the project – up by about $3,500. Fortunately, Dr.& Mrs.Casson, the original sponsors of the project very generously helped with this additional cost, and funds have already been received.
While work is already underway, the best time to disconnect the old storage tanks, install new ones and make those water connections is during the summer break which starts soon. Both Jennifer and I felt that this is one of the projects that we needed to take care of immediately.
Kyitsel-ling is blessed to have it’s own private tube well – a total game changer. The repairs/renovations to
the water system will make life better for the children and staff here.
